Simon Says
The strong increase in 2018 and the continuation upwards in 2019 of trust in government reflects the success of Xi Jinping's far-reaching anti-corruption campaign that began almost as soon as he assumed power in 2012. It also reflects the Chinese public's growing self-confidence, the rise of Chinese brands worldwide, and a sense that the West, particularly the USA, is jealous of China's rise. What this means is that, in the Chinese psyche, there is less (or no) demarcation between people, government and nation. (Disclaimer: this is a generalisation, of course).
